Hi all,

I wanted to personally share with you my recent and very emotional experience in East New Orleans. I was fortunate to be able to travel there with a group of friends and participate in Habitat for Humanity.

Just seeing first hand the devastation from Hurricane Katrina was overwhelming. So many people are still displaced and many, many homes need to be rebuilt.

We toured the Ninth Ward right where the levees broke and saw the new Musicians Village that Habitat for Humanity International is building along with the local chapter.

This was conceived by Harry Connick, Jr. and Branford Marsalis. The final village will consist of 81 Habitat-constructed homes for displaced New Orleans musicians. We saw about 20 homes already built and painted very colorfully. It’s the beginning of a new community and a renewal of its great music.

Our two days were spent in the storm ravaged area of East New Orleans. My task was framing rooms in the new house, something I had surely never done before. What a feeling of camaraderie working with people I just met to truly help those in need.

Day 2

You can see from the pictures how much we accomplished in two days! We also had the honor of watching a house built in just one month being dedicated. It was a beautiful ceremony, and we were welcomed into the Finney family’s home to wish them well.

This experience truly touched my heart. Everyone was so grateful and appreciated our support. New Orleans in definitely coming back!

You can check the national website for more information about Habitat for Humanity in your area at www.habitat.org

As Thanksgiving is approaching, it’s a good time to reflect and be grateful for everything we have.

All good wishes for the holiday,

Nancy Roberts
